More on Graphic Design

Sweetbarefoot started this conversation

Hi Fellow searchers,

This is a good place to explain my desire for a degree in Graphic Design.  I will be 58 years old in less than a month and I have been on SSI disability since 2004, after I had a brain tumor removed.

Now I live on $674 a month. Needless to say I don't do much but watch TV and  'goof ' on the computer.  I have always had an interest in computers and have watched as they have shrunk and what they can do has grown,  the first computer I used was about four feet wide and seven feet long and used keypunch cards for programming. got my first programming degree in 1971 and I am 2 classes shy of my second degree BUT I preferr graphic design.

I decided, oh almost three monthes ago I cannot live on my SSI (I know I'm slow, but I did have a brain tumor). I cannot work outside the home, I am disabled, I am on the computer all the time.... (brain storm)  "why not get paid for 'goofing' on the computer?? " Get a degree, online. Start a business, online. At first just a suppliment to SSI and hopefully get off SSI eventually.

I think this is a good start. What do you think of my idea, am I living in a dream world or is my thought process logical??  Let me know.

 in response to Really...   Really,
Thanks for the comments, I went to Full Sail University, and will be there till 2012. It is a private school, meaning they do not help look for grants or scholarships. They do however, tell you where to go to file for FAFSA.
I know about student loans, I too, am dealing with that.
AND thanks for writing.
I had forgotten I joined here until I was notified of your post.
The computer I joined with crashed and this is my FSU school laptop.

Really

Hi Sweetbarefoot,
I have empathy for you. I am currently enrolled in school for graphic design and I say the best time to do anything is now. Get yourself enrolled in Graphic Design if that is what you really want to do in life. Do what makes you happy and supports you at the same time. As for schools on design, there are a few out there to choose from, but in my mind only one school stands out and that is the Art Institute. So I went there. I am in my second year now and paying for it with student loans. I would love to find a grant myself, but don't know which site really helps instead of just finding you a school. There's the rub. Be wary when you enter a school that they get you every possible modality of help that is out there. Otherwise you may borrow the money like I am and will have to pay it all back.
